Workshop 1. Effective scientific presentations
Room Elhuyar, Bizkaia Aretoa, Bilbao Wednesday March 4 Maximum number of participants: 25 (first come first serve basis) Instructor: Nieves Martín Robles The benefits associated to a good presentation span from making your research team known and starting a collaboration, to increasing the citations of your work, or a future job offer. An effective presentation is one where the speaker is able to transmit a message that we understand, assimilate and remember. However, most presentations we witness are not able to grasp our attention completely, and do not foster the understanding and memory of the message, which is soon forgotten. Communicating our message in an effective way is difficult and represents an added challenge to the scientific career. The good news is that a good speaker isn't born, you become one. In the same manner that we learned how to analyze data or write scientific papers, public speaking is also a matter of practice and being aware of a series of guidelines. In this workshop, we will focus on basic notions on the strategies of body and paraverbal communication, building a message, and the design of visual supports so that our future presentations raise the audience's interest and the understanding and memory of our message. Sala Elhuyar, Bizkaia Aretoa, Bilbao Miércoles 4 de marzo Número máximo de participantes: 25 (por orden de inscripción) Instructora: Nieves Martín Robles Los beneficios asociados a una buena presentación van desde dar a conocer tu grupo de investigación e iniciar una colaboración, una cita más a tu trabajo o una futura oferta laboral. Una presentación eficaz es cuando un orador nos transmite un mensaje que entendemos, asimilamos y recordamos. Sin embargo, la mayoría de las presentaciones a las que asistimos no logran captar nuestra atención completamente ni fomentar la comprensión y recuerdo del mensaje, que en poco tiempo es olvidado. Comunicar de manera efectiva nuestro mensaje en una presentación es difícil y supone un reto añadido a la carrera científica. La buena noticia es que el buen orador no nace, sino que se hace. Igual que aprendimos a analizar datos o escribir artículos científicos, hablar bien en público es cuestión de práctica y conocer una serie de pautas. En este taller abordaremos unas nociones básicas sobre estrategias de comunicación corporal y paraverbal, construcción del mensaje y diseño del soporte visual para que nuestras futuras presentaciones despierten el interés de la audiencia y fomenten la comprensión y recuerdo del mensaje. It will be a practical workshop which will take place in: Ecology Laboratory 0.45, Science and Technology Faculty, University of the Basque Country, Leioa campus. Identificación taxonómica de los principales grupos de abejas Sala 0.45, Facultad de Ciencia y Tecnología, Universidad del País Vasco, Leioa Miércoles 4 de marzo Número máximo de participantes: 25 (por orden de inscripción) Instructor: Francisco de Paula Molina En este taller se estudiarán los principales rasgos que permiten la diferenciación de los principales grupos de abejas de la Península Ibérica. Será un taller eminentemente práctico que se realizará en: Laboratorio de Ecología 0.45, Facultad de Ciencia y Tecnología, Universidad del País Vasco, Leioa. Cómo llegar: Entrando por la puerta principal, pasar hasta el segundo pasillo y ahí a la izquierda, casi al final. |

Moral and ethical questions in the research with invertebrate species

Discussions around moral and ethical questions of our daily research activities are seldom tackled as a research community, but not outside it. As a matter of fact, the public opinion about how animals are treated in research, particularly when animal death is involved in data collection, has radically shifted over the last decades. Invertebrates are not the exception and those principles of vertebrate research are becoming integrated into invertebrate research. This round table aims to bring up a thorough assessment of invertebrate research practices to identify those moral and ethical questions that might be overlooked, certainly in times when biodiversity is facing a deep and dramatic crisis worldwide.
